7 Riders of the W52-FC Porto team have been banned from cycling for up to 7 years for “Prohibited Methods.” The UCI revoked the teams license in July while riders who faced suspension were under trial. This week broke the news of the trial resulting in 7 riders banned from cycling.

For years pro riders in the peloton have been saying that of all places on the planet to race, Portugal is the craziest place when it comes to performance enhancing drugs. Riders often talk about seeing things in these races that just make absolutely no sense, and sensational performances that would put the national level riders on the top step of the Tour de France.

It’s a shock to the cycling world that an entire team has been kicked out of the sport, but no surprise for those in the know that it’s come from a Portuguese team. Below listed are the riders that received bans, and the substances that they were caught with.

Banned Riders & Their Substances

  • José Neves – Human Growth Hormone
  • Samuel Caldeira – Somatropin, Actrapide Human Insulin, Human Growth Hormone
  • Rui Vinhas – Betamethasone
  • Ricardo Mestre – Somatropin
