Tim Merlier takes his second Belgian National Road Race Championships title in a hectic sprint finish

Tim Merlier wins sprint finish in Belgian road championships

It was an eventful finale today in the Belgian road Championships where we saw heavy attacks from the likes of Sep Vanmarcke, Jasper Stuyven, and of course Remco Evenepoel. Inside 10km to go Remco bridged to the group of Stuyven and Vanmarke and looked like he may just ride right through them. Hitting the group with heavy surge after heavy surge Remco tried his best to break the lead group and escape for a chance at solo victory. However Remco wasn’t able to shake the other riders and the peloton closed in on the lead group.

Inside 5km to go there were several crashes, including one rider from KTM who wrapped himself around a poll. It wasn’t a pretty finale, but as we got inside the final KM it was Sport Vlaanderen who took control of the front of the race leading out their fast man, Sasha Weemaes who finished 4th on the day. Instead it came down to a photo finished between Merlier of Alpecin-Fenix and Jordi Meeus of Bora-Hansgrohe.

Merlier was able to take the win in narrow margin and take his second Belgian national championship title just ahead of the Tour de France.
