After suffering from cardiac arrhythmia on Stage 1 of the Vuelta Cataluyna, Sonny Colbrelli is set to retire on November 15th
Italian media source La Gazzetta Sport recently published an article saying that Colbrelli would announce his retirement on November 15th. This news comes as we’ve all been waiting for updates on Colbrelli’s health condition since he suffered cardiac arrhythmia on stage 1 of the Vuelta Catalyuna.
2021 was the best year of Colbrelli’s career where we won his biggest races. He won the
European Championships, Paris Roubaix, and many others. These wins put Colbrelli in a completely different light in professional cycling, as the Italian was always a respected pro, but never seen as a top favorite among the stars of cycling. As the 2022 season approached Colbrelli found his name on the list of favorites, and fulfilling at that. Finishing 2nd, at Omloop before have a few tougher results Colbrelli looked to be a top contender for the upcoming classics.
As many riders do, Colbrelli was using Catalyuna as a hard preparation race for the upcoming classics. However, the uphill finish would prove to be the last test of Colbrelli’s cycling career. The Italian collapsed immediately after crossing the finish line in 2nd place behind Michael Matthews. Nobody knew why in the beginning, but on television we saw ambulances rush in, and we later learned that it was Cardiac Arrhythmia.
Today broke the news that Colbrelli is set to make his retirement announcement on November 15th, as he is reportedly unable to continue competing at the professional level.
