After 3 weeks of hard racing, obstacles, and crashes to overcome, Remco has sealed the overall Vuelta Victory.
At just 22 years old Remco Evenepoel becomes the first Belgian to win a grand tour since the great Eddy Merckx. This win not only makes a huge mark on the history of Belgian cycling, but also the career of Remco Evenepoel.
Although Remco has had a tremendous amount of success in his career starting at such a young age, the pressure to perform in a grand tour has always been there. Today after stage 20, Remco said “This is the first grand tour I’ve started healthy.” That goes a long way when we look at some of the struggles Remco has had in previous grand tours.
Many doubted Remco’s ability to win a 3 week race, but in the end he continued to rise to the occasion day after day, matching the attacks of his competitors, and continuing to put time into them at every opportunity.
This won’t be the end of the season for Remco though, as he looks to go and take a shot at the World Championships in Australia in just over 2 weeks time. A win at worlds would mean a monument, a grand tour, and a world title all in one season.
Will Remco continue to make history in 2022?
We will have to wait to find out.
