Mathieu Van Der Poel Arrest

On Sept 24th 2022, cycling’s super star Mathieu Van Der Poel headed to bed early for a good nights rest ahead of his biggest objective of the year, World Championships. Unfortunately, MVDP would experience the exact opposite of what he set out for as teenagers harassed him at the NOVOTEL Brigthton le Sands Sydney based hotel, banging on his door several times.

As midnight struck and the banging on the door continued MVDP apparently got into an altercation with teenagers. Police were called, MVDP was taken down to the police station and charged with two counts of assault.

The Video Footage

The Claims

The girls claimed to have a red mark on her arm, and some carpet burn from sliding on the carpet. Van Der Poel claimed to not to have had the intention to hurt anyone, and that violence is outside of his characteristics, and anyone that knows him, knows that.

Denied Charges

Van Der Poel ended up dropping out of the worlds road race due to fatigue and stress after arriving home at 4am from the police station. Today Van Der Poel is on his way back home denying all charges, and paying only a $1500 AUD Fine.

This incident is a devastating blow on many levels for Mathieu Van Der Poel. The incident will inevitably effect MVDP’s image in the long run outside of the cycling community as a simple google search is now filled with the ruckus of a small incident where police would most likely not be involved in other countries. Additionally, it will take it’s toll on MVDP’s energy and potentially passion for cycling. Alpecin team director spoke at worlds of how hard Van Der Poel worked to prepare for worlds this year, and that he had once again found love for the sport of cycling, something that had been missing since the Tour de France.

Many fans are outraged by the innocent and have done things like post on social media and crash the hotels reviews for their irresponsibility in being able to provide security for the rider. It’s all a big same for the entire sport of cycling, and the country of Australia.
